By this point, many are familiar with Wisconsin's treasure, Door County, which acts as the state's thumb, separating Lake Michigan from Green Bay. However, even within the scenic Door County lies a true delight that I had overlooked - Washington Island. Although I've lived here almost my entire life, I had never visited the Island! With family visiting from afar, I finally made the trip to the Island (as locals refer to it) last summer.

As you drive up to Gills Rock to board the ferry to the Island, be sure to take a moment to admire the scenic Highway 42, designed to circumvent particular endangered species. This has created a winding, curvy road that is truly a spectacular driving experience!

Upon reaching the ferry terminal, you wait to board the car ferry that crosses Death's Door to Washington Island. Does that sound foreboding? Perhaps it once was, as the waters where Lake Michigan meets Green Bay were notorious for shipwrecks in rough conditions. Nowadays, however, the ferry crossing is much safer on a calm day, and it's enjoyable to observe the deep blue line where the two bodies of water converge.

Upon reaching the Island, we headed to School House Beach. This serene and picturesque part of the Island consists of countless rocks that journeyed from Canada during the glacial movements thousands of years ago. Today, the beach is covered with smooth rocks unique to this spot! It's a beautiful, peaceful place to relax and soak up the sun while reflecting.

As we traveled inland, we paused at the stunning lavender fields, which were in full bloom, fragrant, and teeming with lovely pollinators. Simply sitting among the blossoms and inhaling the delightful aroma is a true pleasure!

Our last destination was the renowned stavkirke replica on the Island. Having visited the genuine ones in Norway, this is a faithful reproduction of the originals, offering those unable to travel far a taste of their Norwegian heritage. The kirke was serene, charming, and emblematic of the Viking spirit that led our ancestors to America and the Upper Midwest.

I'm thrilled that I finally made the trip to the Island, and I am certain it won't be long before I return to discover more of this iconic part of Door County.
